Resistance training
The objective of resistance training is to train and develop specific muscles in the body, like the arms or the legs of an individual.
Resistance training will allow you to tone the body and increase your lean muscle mass which will lift your resting metabolic rate (the amount of calories your body burns at rest).
It is important to maintain muscle mass as we age because muscle increases strength, protects against osteoarthritis, protects against diabetes, helps manage cholesterol and also because a toned body looks good!
To grow muscle you must train to what we call failure. The old saying "No pain no gain!" was almost true. It is "no stress no gain." The body responds to stress by growing adapting and surviving. The stress is presented to the body as an overload or an increased amount of weight above what it is used to.
To get the greatest growth you must train with a weight where you hit failure. This failure signifies the exhaustion of the muscles' capabilities.
With correct recovery and nutrition the muscle will adapt and come back bigger or stronger depending on the training goals.
